When 291 trees were planted in 1927 by the first Interlaken Shade Tree Commission, the reputation of this concerned group of residents as an "active" organization was established. The Commission's ongoing tree planting and maintenance program has been so successful that in 1988 the Borough was approved by the National Arbor Day Foundation, in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters as ''Tree City USA." Due to the dedicated efforts of this Commission, Interlaken has met the criteria to continue this designation on an annual basis.
In 1992, the Shade Tree Commission developed the Interlaken Arboretum located just inside the easterly entrance gates to our community for the enjoyment and education of our residents. The Arboretum is a unique component to our community that further emphasizes the importance Interlaken places on the environment and continued aesthetic quality of our borough. It is the goal of the Commission, through the acquisition of grant funding to extend the Arboretum, renovate the lake front and develop several "pocket parks" along the lake.
The commission encourages the participation of the residents in Arbor Day activities in the spring and tree decorating 'and lighting festivities in the winter. The "Yard of the Month" program, begun in 1995, has been a great success. During the months of May through September, the program recognizes homeowners dedicated to the beautifi-cation of our community with a focus on trees and tree maintenance. The Commission has worked toward educating the residents by setting a good example through proper care, maintenance and protection of our most valuable natural resource, our trees.
The Commission extends their sincere gratitude to the residents, Mayor and Borough Council for the continued support that enables them to improve their programs and activities. If our Interlaken trees could talk they would without a doubt thank the members of the Interlaken Shade Tree Commission for their expert care and devotion through the years.
